Sault College: New Early Learning Centre Officially Opens Its Doors
(Sault Ste. Marie, ON August 23, 2018) –
Today, surrounded by community members, supporters, staff and special guests, Sault College celebrated the official grand opening of the new home of its Early Learning Centre! The centre, currently in its 45th year, recently moved to the new, refreshed space to continue its long history of offering welcoming, respectful, and stimulating early learning and care to numerous community families and an amazing practical learning environment for the College’s Early Childhood Education (ECE) students.
The new location has positioned the Centre to increase the amount of childcare spaces further reinforcing the College’s commitment to its students and community members. Now accommodating 80 children, ten new infant spots and eight new preschool spots have been added. The Centre now has a total of 10 infant (0-18 months), 30 toddler (18 -30 months) and 40 preschool spots (31 months – 5 years old), and also runs the before and after school care programs at St. Paul’s School for children 4-12 years.
The Early Learning Centre continues to be a valuable resource both to area families as well as Sault College students who benefit tremendously from onsite childcare. Additionally, the Centre offers subsidy for families, Indigenous specific funding, and provides economic benefits to our community through the employment of more than 19 staff members.
The Centre also serves as the LAB for the ECE program. The staff work collaboratively with the faculty of the program to provide onsite learning opportunities for ECE students enrolled at Sault College. These experiential learning opportunities have been critical in helping our students grow and thrive in their chosen field of study. This hands-on learning is paramount in the education of our students and positions them well to successfully transition into a workforce that is in high demand both locally and provincially. At this time, all full-time staff employed at the Centre are graduates of the College’s ECE program.
“We couldn’t be more proud to officially open our new Early Learning Centre,” said Nancy Leindecker, Manager, Early Learning Centre. “Our beautiful new facility has so much to offer staff, students and community members alike. We are tremendously excited to continue teaching and caring for our young generation in this revitalized Centre.”
The new Early Learning Centre was made possible through funding received from the: District of Sault Ste. Marie Social Services Administration Board (DSSAB), Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU), and the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC).
“The support received from DSSAB, MTCU, and NOHFC has been instrumental in bringing this project to fruition,” said Dr. Ron Common, President, Sault College. “We’re grateful for the ongoing support from these partners. The staff of our Early Learning Centre also played a vital role in making the Centre what it is today – their expertise, hard-work and passion has not gone unnoticed.”
Benjamin Franklin once noted that without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning. In 1973, Sault College recognized the importance of supporting its students and staff with onsite childcare and opened the doors of its very first childcare centre. Through the years there have been many changes culminating to this moment in 2018 when we officially open the Early Learning Centre – a Centre that many staff, students, children and families are proud to call home and one that has and continues to shape the lives and minds of many.
Currently, there is a shortage of available and qualified Early Childhood Educators in Ontario. By graduating from the Early Childhood Education Program at Sault College, graduates have the opportunity to work in school-based child care, Early On Centres, Licensed Home-Based childcare, and culturally relevant child and family programs or licensed childcare in Indigenous communities. For more information about our Early Childhood Education program contact Colleen Brady, Coordinator and Professor, Early Childhood Education program at 705.759.2554 extension 2572.
