MONCTON, N.B. _ Two men involved in a shale gas protest that turned violent last year in New Brunswick have been sentenced to 15 months in jail.
The RCMP says 21-year-old Germain Breau of the Elsipogtog First Nation was sentenced Tuesday after he was found guilty of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and four counts of pointing a firearm.
The provincial court in Moncton also sentenced 20-year-old Aaron Francis of the Eskasoni First Nation after he was convicted of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
Both men were also given two years of probation following their jail time.
Protests in the area of Rexton, N.B., last October over shale gas development erupted into violence, during which police cars were torched when the RCMP began enforcing an injunction to end a blockade of a compound where energy company SWN Resources stored exploration equipment.
