EDMONTON – It was unprecedented in Alberta political history.

Representatives of 19 public and Catholic school boards held rallies Monday afternoon in Edmonton and Calgary to protest provincial cuts to school funding.

School trustees might not have called them protest rallies, but in a province where boards have long feared to bite the government that funds them, there’s no other way to describe what occurred.

Debbie Engel, chairwoman of the Edmonton Catholic school board, stressed they weren’t “demanding” more money, but desperately asking.
