JUDGE TO DECIDE ON BAIL FOR DENNIS OLAND

Dennis Oland will learn today if he’ll walk out of a Fredericton courthouse free on bail, or go to prison to await the appeal of his second-degree murder conviction. Oland was sentenced last week to life in prison with no chance of parole for 10 years in the 2011 bludgeoning death of his father, Richard Oland.

VIGIL SET FOR PASTOR JAILED IN NORTH KOREA

Hundreds of supporters of a Canadian pastor serving a life sentence in North Korea are to demonstrate on Parliament Hill today to urge the government to press for his release. Hyeon Soo Lim, a pastor with the Light Korean Presbyterian Church of Mississauga, Ont., was sentenced by a North Korean court to life in prison at hard labour for what it called crimes against the state.

BOMBARDIER EXPECTED TO ISSUE WEAK RESULTS

Bombardier ends a difficult fiscal year today when it releases what are expected to be weak financial results that could be overshadowed by layoffs. The aircraft maker could be poised to lose more than US$4 billion in 2015 on lower sales and charges. Adjusted profits, excluding one-time items, are forecast to drop in half in both the fourth quarter and over the full year, according to analysts polled by Thomson Reuters.

BROADEN SCOPE OF MMIW INQUIRY: JACK

An Ojibway activist is calling on the federal government to include domestic abuse in a forthcoming inquiry exploring the issue of missing and murdered aboriginal women. Joan Jack, a retired lawyer who ran to lead the Assembly of First Nations in 2012, says the inquiry should include the entire spectrum of vulnerabilities faced by aboriginal women both on- and off-reserve.

SPCA SEIZES 70 DOGS AND CATS FROM BC BREEDER

Another 70 animals have been seized by the B.C. SPCA, less than a month after the animal welfare agency rescued more than six dozen dogs from a puppy mill. Officials took 56 cats, 12 dogs and two puppies from a site in Surrey, B.C., Tuesday after a vet deemed they were all in distress. This follows the seizure of 66 dogs from a Langley puppy mill on Feb. 4.

IKEA CANADA LOOKS INTO FURNITURE RECYCLING

Ikea is looking at bringing a “take back” program to Canada that would allow customers to trade furniture purchased from the Swedish furniture giant in exchange for store credit. Under the initiative, mirrored after similar environmentally-friendly initiatives in France and Belgium, the retailer would then resell the second-hand item or recycle it.
