Statement by Grand Chief George Arcand Jr. on the discovery of potential graves at former Grouard Mission Site
March 2, 2022
(Amiskwacîwâskahikan – Treaty No. 6 Territory)
The Confederacy of Treaty Six First Nations is deeply saddened to learn of the unmarked graves at the former Grouard Mission Site.
On behalf of the Confederacy of Treaty Six First Nations we would like to extend our prayers to the community of Kapawe’no First Nation, Treaty 8 and other Indigenous communities who are affected by these findings.
“Our hearts are heavy with this news. I commend Chief Halcrow for listening to the stories of survivors in his Nation that helped guide these uncovering’s. We know this work is difficult, but it is important that we do not stop until we find and honor all the children who were lost. Our heart-felt prayers are with Treaty 8 as they continue to seek justice and closure for their people. I encourage all individuals who are affected by these findings to use the supports available and look after themselves during these trying times.” said Grand Chief Arcand Jr.
For anyone having difficulty dealing with this, please remember there are supports available such as the National Indian Residential School Crisis Line is 1-866-925-4419.
