Statement by Tsuut’ina Chief Roy Whitney on the Passing of Ron Southern

“He shared our values and beliefs”

TSUUT’INA, ALBERTA, Jan. 21, 2016 – Roy Whitney, Chief of the Tsuut’ina First Nation, would like to express deep sadness and offer condolences to the friends and family of Ron Southern, a man who Whitney calls, “a true and loyal friend to Tsuut’ina people.”

“Though a sad day for the Southern family and the many, many people touched by Ron’s work, generosity and integrity, this is also a day where I choose to reflect with fondness and respect on a man who built so many things, created deep life-long and personal friendships with the people he touched, and who did not just talk about respect for First Nations people – he demonstrated it. Ron made Tsuut’ina a central part of the vision and execution of Spruce Meadows. In 2013, I was honoured to make Ron an honourary member of the Tsuut’ina Nation, bestowed honourary Chieftainship and gave him the name ‘Sorrel Horse’.

Ron did more than just share his time, vision and resources with First Nations people – especially though his support of education for Tsuut’ina young people – I know he also shared our values and beliefs. Canada is a better place for having had Ron Southern. I offer my sincerest wishes for strength and peace to his family. I hope they always remember that they have another extended family – here at Tsuut’ina,” concluded Chief Roy Whitney today.
