Statement Following Meeting with the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall
May 19, 2022
President Caron provided a brief statement this morning following the meeting with the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall.
At the engagement last night, I had the opportunity to briefly speak with Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall regarding an acknowledgment from the Queen and the British Monarchy for their role in the colonization of Canada.
They seemed very genuine about wanting to listen, learn, and confront the darker aspects of our shared history. The Royal Family built immense intergenerational wealth through the resources of Turtle Island and the colonization processes that surrounded them. They’ve benefited greatly from the Doctrine of Discovery, while many others have suffered.
I reminded Prince Charles that to acknowledge the fullness of our shared history and the Monarchy’s role within it would be very meaningful to many, including Survivors.
It meant a great deal that Prince Charles and his family wanted to listen and learn. To hear Indigenous Peoples’ truths in the ways that we remember them. It’s an important step forward. We reminded them that we are here to walk with them on that journey of listening, learning, and hopefully taking action toward truth, justice, healing and reconciliation. There’s a role for everyone to play.
