Stories of Bay St. George Mi’kmaq soldiers being shared and preserved – The Telegram

In anticipation of the 100th anniversary of The Battle of Beaumont-Hamel, “Sharing the Memories” is the theme for a series of community gatherings around Bay St. George in April.

Everyone is welcome to participate and share their stories, photos or other documents to help build on existing information, according to a prepared release from Flat Bay Band Inc.

This commemorative project, an initiative of No’kmaq Village – Flat Bay Band Inc., is documenting all 133 First World War Mi’kmaq soldiers from Bay St. George. It is important to note that the Newfoundland Mi’kmaq were not recognized as Indigenous people by the then Dominion of Newfoundland.

“We are fortunate in that Bay St. George was very well documented with Maura Hanrahan’s database of Newfoundland Mi’kmaq soldiers and books written by local authors. We’ve created records of all the available data and will use this as a benchmark for any new information,” Liz LaSaga, chief of No’kmaq Village, said.
