Labour Force Survey, May 2021
Employment fell by 68,000 (-0.4%) in May, adding to a decline of 207,000 in April. The unemployment rate was little changed at 8.2%.
Labour productivity, hourly compensation and unit labour cost, first quarter 2021
Labour productivity of Canadian businesses fell 1.7% in the first quarter, after posting a decline of 2.1% in the previous quarter and a record decrease of 9.8% in the third quarter of 2020. This third consecutive quarterly drop continued to offset the strong gains in productivity observed in the first two quarters of 2020.
COVID-19 Vaccination Coverage Survey
The COVID-19 vaccine rollout continues to pick up speed across Canada and the number of those eligible to receive their shot grows every week. COVID-19 vaccines were available to all residents of the territories aged 18 and older at the time of the survey, which was collected from March 15 to April 12, 2021.
Research and development of Canadian private non-profit organizations, 2019 (actual), 2020 (preliminary) and 2021 (intentions)
Private non-profit organizations in Canada indicated their intentions to spend less on in-house and outsourced research and development (R&D) activities in 2021 (down to $141 million and $470 million, respectively). This follows similar declines reported in the preliminary estimates of in-house and outsourced R&D spending in 2020 (declining to $145 million and $534 million, respectively).
Sawmills, March 2021
Lumber production increased 20.9% from February to 5 632.4 thousand cubic metres in March. Production was 12.4% higher than in March 2020.
Asphalt roofing material, April 2021
Shipments of asphalt shingles totalled 3.3 million metric bundles in April—down 17.7% from the previous month and up 74.2% from April 2020.
