Canadian Survey on Business Conditions, second quarter 2023
Businesses continued to expect to face a variety of obstacles in the short term related to rising inflation, rising costs, hiring and retention, as well as supply chains. Some pressures, including those related to supply chains and prices, have been easing since the previous quarter.
Monthly estimates of business openings and closures, February 2023
The business opening rate dropped from 4.6% in January to 4.4% in February, 0.3 percentage points below its 2015-to-2019 historical average. Following three consecutive months of decline in April 2023, the business closure rate increased by 0.2 percentage points to settle at 4.5%, slightly below its historical average of 4.6%. As closures were higher than openings, the number of active businesses dropped by 0.2% (-1,452).
Representation of women on boards of directors and in officer positions, 2020
The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on women’s employment, with women accounting for more than half of the year-over-year employment losses recorded from March 2020 to February 2021. Despite these setbacks, modest increases in the representation of women in executive positions were recorded from 2019 to 2020.
Production and disposition of tobacco products, April 2023
Canadian manufacturers produced 1.1 billion cigarettes in April 2023, down 26.8% from March 2023. Cigarette production was 12.4% lower compared with April 2022.
Deliveries of major grains, April 2023
Data on major grain deliveries are now available for April.
Milled wheat and wheat flour produced, April 2023
Millers milled 267 514 tonnes of wheat in April, while wheat flour production totalled 202 839 tonnes.
Oilseed crushing statistics, April 2023
Oilseed processors crushed 886 489 tonnes of canola in April. Oil production totalled 371 693 tonnes, while meal production totalled 523 157 tonnes.
