Canadian Perspectives Survey Series 3: Resuming economic and social activities during COVID-19
From June 15 to 21, Statistics Canada conducted a new survey to find out how Canadians were reacting to the pandemic, with a focus on their perceptions on reopening the economy and loosening restrictions. The first results indicate that although most Canadians will continue to follow basic safety rules, many are worried about returning to work.
Study: Perceptions of personal safety among population groups designated as visible minorities in Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic
From May 12 to May 25, 2020, Statistics Canada collected data on the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on perceptions of safety from 43,000 Canadians using the crowdsourcing data collection initiative. A study released today, “Perceptions of personal safety among population groups designated as visible minorities in Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic,” provides insight on these perceptions among visible minority groups compared with the rest of the population.
Study: The decline in production and investment in Canada’s oil and gas sector and its impact on the economy
Following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the decline in oil prices in March and April 2020, companies in the oil and gas sector announced reductions in planned capital expenditures and investment. A new study, titled “The Decline in Production and Investment in Canada’s Oil and Gas Sector and its Impact on the Economy,” shows that if the announced reductions are realized, gross domestic product (GDP) would be 1.0% to 2.0% lower and jobs would decline by 111,000 to 222,000, compared with the situation where reductions in the oil and gas sector do not occur.
National Travel Survey, fourth quarter 2019
The looming pandemic was not yet a consideration in the travel decisions of Canadians in the final months of 2019. Nevertheless, trips within Canada and abroad were down 1.5% year over year to 71.3 million trips from October through December 2019.
Visitor Travel Survey, fourth quarter 2019
International travellers made 6.4 million trips to Canada in the fourth quarter, when the emerging pandemic was not yet a consideration in travel decisions, up 2.8% from the same quarter of 2018.
