The CIHR Research Excellence, Diversity, and Independence (REDI) program is a groundbreaking initiative that supports postdoctoral researchers, clinical fellows, and research associates from underrepresented groups as they transition to independent research careers in Canada.
First launched in 2022, REDI addresses systemic barriers in academia such as racism, colonialism, and gender bias by offering mentorship, funding, and a strong peer cohort model. In its first round, over $28 million supported 43 researchers across 25 institutions.
Dr. Charu Kaushic, Scientific Director of the CIHR Institute of Infection and Immunity, and Dr. Chelsea Gabel, Scientific Director of the CIHR Institute of Indigenous Peoples’ Health, reflect on how REDI is transforming the academic landscape and what’s next as the program expands to include a dedicated stream for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis scholars in its second iteration.
