Beginning in January, Otonabee South Monaghan Township Council will begin its meetings with a land recognition of the traditional territory of the Michi Saagiig Peoples.
Mayor Joe Taylor said he researched a number of land acknowledgments before making the recommendation to council, which was unanimously accepted at Monday’s regular meeting.
“I wanted one that was unique to Otonabee South-Monaghan,” he said. “I didn’t want it to be the same generic that we often hear. I really like the concept of considering the next seven generations … and I wanted to have that in our land recognition. And we wanted one that could be adopted by any group or organization in the township.”
