It was déjà vu all over again when I read the criticisms of Pope Francis’ expression of sorrow and shame over the Catholic Church’s role in the Indian residential school system. Was this the long-awaited papal apology?

The reaction to the Pope’s words brought back memories of Indian Affairs Minister Jane Stewart’s statement of reconciliation in 1998, which had been received as pukka by some, and by others as a bromide contrived to evade liability. At least Stewart hadn’t settled on April 1 as her day of contrition.

This illustrates the principle that apologies, like beauty, are in the eye of the beholder. On the statement of reconciliation’s 10-year anniversary, I visited Stewart’s home and asked her if she’d been pressured in any way to stop short of issuing an apology. She replied that she’d delivered a genuine apology in every respect but in name.
