Western University launches Indigenous-focused training for professors – London Free Press

Western University professors and graduate students will soon be offered a new course to ensure Indigenous perspectives are included in their lessons.

School officials this week announced two new introductory classes, each one-hour long, that will offer tools to add nuance to what instructors are offering in the classroom.

“We’re seeing more and more of an interest, a genuine interest on campus, to really rethink the way that we do things and to include Indigenous perspectives,” said Candace Brunette-Debassige, a professor in Western’s faculty of education.

She added: “When you’re doing that decolonizing work, inevitably, you’re going to unsettle those biases; those tensions will emerge in the classroom. That can be very challenging for instructors, so we want to prepare them so that they can have those conversations in respectful ways.”
