For some of the 10 Whatì students who travelled to an Edmonton conference last week, it was their first time leaving the Northwest Territories.
The students drove with chaperones to the Indigenous Youth Rising Conference at MacEwan University’s kihêw waciston Indigenous Centre.
The conference aims to give Indigenous youth opportunities to explore post-secondary education, celebrate culture and connect with Indigenous role models.
Lisa Nitsiza, Whatì’s senior administrative officer, said it was one of the largest events outside the territory in which the community government has taken part.
