Women in PEI: Statistical Review: The Fourth Edition now available
The latest statistical review of women in Prince Edward Island provides valuable information for gender-based analysis.
Women in PEI: A Statistical Review: The Fourth Edition provides a snapshot of the female population in Prince Edward Island based on sex and gender-disaggregated data on population, education, work and income, health, justice, violence, shelter services, and leadership.
The review is updated every five years and this newest version includes quantitative data for the years 2016-2020.
“I would like to thank the many community organizations and government departments that contributed time and expertise to this review. The valuable information in this report will help inform important policy and program decisions to support women. It also offers us a glimpse of how the global pandemic is truly impacting women, which is critical information in supporting our province’s economic recovery.”
– Minister Responsible for the Status of Women Natalie Jameson
Highlights of the Statistical Review:
• Females made up 50.8 per cent of the Island population
• The median age of Island females was 44.2 years
• Females in Prince Edward Island were more likely than males to have obtained higher education
• Females made up 47 per cent of the Island labour force in 2020
• The unemployment rate for females increased by 3.8 per cent in 2020

“Statistics are a starting point for making better policy and also for telling a truer story about life in Prince Edward Island, our success and where we can do better,” said PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women Executive Director, Jane Ledwell. “We value that the Women in PEI Statistical Review provides up-to-date data that helps the not-for-profit groups that serve our community so well to apply for funding to do their essential equality-seeking work. In the coming months and years, we will use the information to help improve the situation of all women-identifying Islanders.”
The Province of Prince Edward Island recognizes that the sex and gender-disaggregated data in this review are primarily limited to binary categories that do not reflect all individuals in society. As more disaggregated data for diverse population groups becomes available, it will be included in future editions of the Review.
