WSD to establish Education Equity Office
(Winnipeg, MB) – The Board of Trustees of the Winnipeg School Division (WSD) has approved a motion to establish an Education Equity Office by August 2022.
Action on the motion, presented by Trustee and Chair Betty Edel and passed unanimously by the Board, will start with establishing an Education Equity Advisory Council comprised of trustees, administration and community members. The terms of reference of the advisory council will serve to improve academic outcomes for all students and address barriers faced by students from Indigenous, racialized and oppressed communities in order to better meet their aspiration and needs.
The Education Equity Advisory Council is also tasked with formulating an action plan including a proposed mandate, structure and transition plan and budget for the purpose of creating the Education Equity Office.
WSD is celebrating 150 years of learning this year and has 78 schools, 29,593 students and 4,573 full-time employees. Its purpose is to provide a learning environment that fosters the growth of each student’s potential and provide equitable opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and values necessary for meaningful participation in a global and diverse society.
