In his recent opinion piece, Chris Nelson asserts that Prime Minister Trudeau failed to “look up the definition” of genocide before using it to describe Canada’s actions and inactions towards Indigenous communities. He is clearly guilty of not understanding the definition himself.
The definition used by the MMIWG inquiry is the one provided by the United Nations. It clearly backs up the charge of genocide in the findings of the inquiry.
Nelson wants to use the approach of denial with some kind of excuse that ‘well it wasn’t a Hitler level genocide so we can just ignore it.’
