MEDIA RELEASE

Aboriginal Nurses Association of Canada will release report findings to
coincide with National Aboriginal Nurses Day on May 10, 2013.

For immediate release

The Aboriginal Nurses Association of Canada (A.N.A.C.) will release findings tomorrow from its Survey of the Educational Needs of First Nations Nurses Working in Transferred Communities.

A.N.A.C. commissioned this survey of the educational needs of nurses working in transferred First Nations communities, in order to identify gaps in accessing knowledge, learning opportunities and training, and to use this information to provide educational opportunities for nurses.

This report provides findings from almost 200 nurses working in transferred First Nations communities who completed the online survey about their education and training needs.

The survey was conducted in February and March 2013 and respondents represent most regions in Canada, with larger numbers of respondents in Ontario, B.C., Manitoba, and Saskatchewan. Most of the nurses who responded to the survey have been employed in nursing for five years or less.

The survey was completed by Registered Nurses (RN), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN), and nurse practitioners; and their roles include nurse managers and administrators, community health nurses, clinic nurses and nurse researchers.

Understanding the needs of nurses working in transferred First Nations communities is an important part of the overall understanding necessary to strengthen recruitment and retention of nursing staff in First Nations communities, and in ultimately improving the quality of client care by supporting the ongoing education of nurses.

The full report will be made available on the A.N.A.C. website on May 10, 2013 at 9:30am EST at http://www.anac.on.ca/

The mission of the Aboriginal Nurses Association of Canada is to improve the health of Aboriginal people, by supporting Aboriginal Nurses and by promoting the development and practice of Aboriginal Health Nursing.
