Tuesday, December 9, 2009

AKWESASNE MOHAWK TERRITORY – The Aboriginal Sport Circle (ASC) is pleased to announce that Winnipeg will host the 2009 National Aboriginal Hockey Championships from May 3 – 9, 2009.“The Aboriginal Sport Circle continues to promote and support the development of Aboriginal athletes and coaches as well as Aboriginal communities in the staging of high profile national events such as the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships,” said ASC chairperson George Marshall.

“As a growing focal point for Aboriginal hockey, we are pleased that the city Winnipeg and the four host partners will host this year’s championships.”

The Manitoba Métis Federation, Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak, Keewatin Tribal Council, and the Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation will host the event.

The ASC promotes personal excellence through sport, and supports the holistic development of Aboriginal athletes and coaches. As a program of the ASC, the National Aboriginal Hockey
Championships reflect those priorities while serving as the premier competition for minor level Aboriginal hockey in Canada.

The ASC is Canada’s national voice for Aboriginal sport, which brings together the interests of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. It was established in 1995 to respond to the need for more accessible and equitable sport and recreation opportunities for Aboriginal peoples.

Sanctioned by Hockey Canada, this event provides a forum for elite Bantam/Midget age Aboriginal hockey players, attracting participation from First Nations, Inuit, and Métis within the Provinces and Territories of Canada. The all-star format was designed to bring the best under -18 Aboriginal male/female hockey players to compete for the Turtle Island Cup.
