Akwesasne’s Henry Lickers becomes first Indigenous IJC commissioner – The Cornwall Standard Freeholder
May 20, 2019
AKWESASNE — The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s top environmental scientist, Henry Lickers, has become the first Indigenous person appointed to the International Joint Commission (IJC).
Lickers was one of two new commissioners appointed to represent Canada on the IJC, along with Merrell-Ann Phare, a lawyer who has worked with many Indigenous groups.
“I’m deeply honoured to be an IJC Commissioner with my wonderful colleagues Pierre Béland … and Henry Lickers (who is) a deeply knowledgeable and wise scientist and advocate. (And now) the first ever Indigenous commissioner,” tweeted Phare.
The Standard-Freeholder reached out to Lickers on Friday but was unable to get in contact with him.
