PENTAGON, United States – The NAFTA talks continue today in Alexandria, Virginia where rules for auto parts are expected to be on the table.

Today’s talks follow the latest aggressive proposal from the United Stated to place a sunset clause to end the trade pact after five years, unless the member countries explicitly opted to renew it.

But both Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto said last night that proposal is just an idea and that neither country will leave the table based on proposals.

Negotiations for a revamped NAFTA are now in their fourth round and the U-S sunset clause idea is just the latest in a series of moves that have frustrated Canadian and Mexican negotiators.

Pena Nieto indicated he was paying attention to a suggestion from U-S President Donald Trump on Wednesday that should NAFTA talks fail, bilateral deals could be negotiated instead.

Trudeau didn’t rule out the notion yesterday and Pena Nieto said he did discuss it with the prime minister yesterday.
