Forest fire forces evacuation of Keewaywin First Nation – Kenora Daily Miner and News

Red Lake 23, a 135 acre forest fire located 12 kilometers southwest of Keewaywin First Nation has forced the evacuation of the community.
The evacuation began Tuesday, July 3 with 87 evacuees arriving in Sioux Lookout and another 122 arrivals the following day. The evacuees are primarily elderly, children, people with respiratory problems and pregnant women.
Environment Canada issued a special air quality statement for Kenora, Grassy Narrows and Whitedog Friday morning.
Smoke plumes are moving over the region in the vicinity of Pikangikum from several forest fires located west and southwest of the community. There are also a few fires to west and southwest of Sandy Lake. Forecast winds are expected from the northwest today which will drift the smoke to the south and southeast.
