National Chief Atleo congratulates Grand Chief Edward John on
Re-Appointment to the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues

(Ottawa, ON) – The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) congratulates Grand Chief Edward John on his new three-year mandate as North American Representative to the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII).

“On behalf of the AFN Executive, I wish to congratulate Grand Chief Edward John on his second term with the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. I have had the honour to work closely with Grand Chief John over the years and can attest to his passion and dedication to First Nations issues,” said AFN National Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo. “He has represented our issues with great dignity throughout the last three years. This re-appointment shows the diligence and commitment he has brought to his task and the contribution he is making to improve the lives of Indigenous Peoples around the world. I commend the United Nations Economic and Social Council for recognizing his hard work.”

Grand Chief Edward John has represented the AFN at various international meetings including the United Nations and the Organization of American States. He made important contributions during the drafting of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).  He was also selected chairman of the 11^th Session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.

AFN Regional Chief Ghislain Picard (Quebec/Labrador), International portfolio holder, added: “I have known Grand Chief Edward John for many years and he has been an international leader for First Nations rights and self-determination. He has led a human rights-based approach to the development of our Nations and their well-being. He is relentless in his advocacy to countries around the world on the UNDRIP and free, prior and informed consent.”

Le Chef national Atleo félicite le Grand Chef Edward John pour le renouvellement de son mandat auprès de l’Instance permanente des Nations Unies sur les questions autochtones

(Ottawa, ON) – L’Assemblée des Premières Nations (APN) souhaite féliciter le                Grand Chef Edward John pour son nouveau mandat de trois ans à titre de représentant de l’Amérique du Nord auprès de l’Instance permanente des Nations Unies sur les questions autochtones (UNPFII).

« Au nom du conseil exécutif de l’APN, je souhaite féliciter le Grand Chef Edward John pour son second mandat auprès de l’Instance permanente des Nations Unies sur les questions autochtones. J’ai eu l’honneur de travailler en étroite collaboration avec le Grand Chef John au cours des années et je peux témoigner de sa passion et de son dévouement pour les intérêts des Premières Nations », a souligné le Chef national de l’APN, Shawn A-in-chut Atleo. « En effet, le Grand Chef John a représenté nos intérêts avec une grande dignité au cours des trois dernières années. La reconduction de son mandat démontre le professionnalisme et l’engagement qu’il a apportés à ses fonctions ainsi que son rôle dans l’amélioration des conditions de vie des peuples autochtones du monde entier. Je tiens à saluer le Conseil économique et social des Nations Unies pour avoir reconnu son travail considérable. »

Le Grand Chef Edward John a représenté l’APN à l’occasion de plusieurs réunions internationales, notamment aux Nations Unies et à l’Organisation des États américains. Sa contribution s’est avérée précieuse pendant l’élaboration de la Déclaration des Nations Unies sur les droits des peuples autochtones (UNDRIP). Il a également été retenu à titre de président de la 11^e session de l’Instance permanente des Nations Unies sur les questions autochtones.

Le Chef régional de l’APN pour le Québec et le Labrador, Ghislain Picard, responsable du portefeuille international, a ajouté ceci : « Je connais le Grand Chef Edward John depuis de nombreuses années : c’est un leader international pour les droits des Premières Nations et pour leur autodétermination. Il a mis en place une approche basée sur les droits de la personne visant le développement de nos nations et leur bien-être. Il défend constamment nos droits figurant dans la Déclaration des Nations Unies sur les droits des peuples autochtones dans le monde ainsi que le consentement libre, préalable et éclairé. »
