Bridging Lessons Learned into Action

Ken Clement, Chief Executive Officer of CAAN announced today the relocation and appointment to the Vancouver office. The important work of advocacy, knowledge exchange and policy development for Aboriginal People will continue in Canada. Of special importance will be the voices of Aboriginal people living with HIV/AIDS who’s lived experiences will assist in shaping the policy direction for Aboriginal AIDS service organizations at a National level. Prior to his appointment, Merv Thomas of the Chitek Lake Band in Saskatchewan served as the Executive Director of Circle of Eagles Lodge Society, a halfway house for Aboriginal men and women involved in the correctional system. Mr. Thomas has direct experiences in working with Aboriginal people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. He received a certificate in Business Administration and will be the National Programs/Communications Manager.

Mr. Sandy Lalonde, of the Saulteau First Nations in Moberly Lake, BC will be the Administrative Coordinator responsible for the administrative needs of the office. Mr. Lalonde has a strong background in youth advocacy. During his time working in his community, Mr. Lalonde was able to gain valuable management and program development skills and experience. His passion for HIV/AIDS work comes from his personal experiences of working with youth who are living with the virus. He looks forward to the challenges of this new position and moving issues of Aboriginal youth to the forefront. He is currently enrolled at the University of British Columbia in the Aboriginal Health and Community Administration Program designed to enhance his skills and knowledge in the health field.

CAAN can use your voice to stop HIV/AIDS related stigma and discrimination and reduce the fear of being tested for HIV. You can use your voice to offer concern, compassion and encouragement to those who test positive to access HIV treatment and how to protect themselves.
