Shoal Lake 40 First Nation road just got much more expensive – Winnipeg Sun

A plan to build a road from Shoal Lake 40 First Nation to the Trans-Canada Highway just got a whole lot more expensive for taxpayers.

The three levels of government agreed last year to fund the 24-kilometre, all-season road to connect the First Nation to the highway. But what was originally supposed to be a $30-million construction project has soared 55%, according to Ernie Gilroy, chief executive officer of Manitoba’s East Side Road Authority.

“We’re figuring this job is going to be about $46.5 million,” Gilroy told the Winnipeg Sun, adding a number of costs were excluded from the original estimate.

And that won’t even be for a paved road, he said.
