TIMMINS – MP Charlie Angus (NDP — Timmins-James Bay) says the presence of St. Anne’s residential school survivors in Ottawa left a strong impression as Members of Parliament voted overwhelmingly this to extend to Pope Francis a formal invitation to apologize in person to Indigenous Peoples for decades of abuse meted out in residential schools across Canada.

“The St. Anne’s survivors (from Fort Albany), who have been so powerful in pushing this issue forward, coming to Ottawa, I think, greatly shifted this discussion dramatically,” said Angus, who had tabled the motion voted on Tuesday. “Their presence and their dignity impressed people from all political parties, wanting to come meet with them, to talk with them, and just thank them. Their efforts, I think, helped move this yardstick dramatically.”

The motion passed by a margin of 269 to 10.

Angus said, “It was certainly one of the prouder moments of this Parliament.”
