PSEPC: Minister Day Tables 80 RCMP First Nations Community Policing Service Agreements
OTTAWA, ONTARIO–(March 1, 2007) – The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, today tabled 80 Royal Canadian Mounted Police First Nations Community Policing Service (RCMP FNCPS) Agreements for communities across Canada.
“These agreements demonstrate that Canada’s New Government is taking action in collaboration with Provinces and Territories, as well as First Nations communities, to support Aboriginal policing and make our communities safer,” said Minister Day. “Through these agreements, RCMP members will provide dedicated police services to First Nations communities across the country,” he added.
RCMP FNCPS agreements are bilateral agreements signed by the Government of Canada and participating Provinces and Territories. They provide the administrative and financial framework for individual Community Tripartite Agreements.
With these Community Agreements, First Nations benefit from the presence of police members from the RCMP in their communities. The RCMP also makes every effort to hire members of Aboriginal descent in these community police services.
