The Fraser Institute: Media Advisory-Calvin Helin, Noted Aboriginal Lawyer and Best-Selling Author, Offers Solutions to Canadian Aboriginals’ Welfare Dependency

Vancouver, British Columbia –(Sept. 29, 2008) – Calvin Helin, lawyer, author and an outspoken opponent of Canada’s long standing welfare state approach to aboriginal issues, will discuss how the flawed government structure for aboriginals in Canada and dependence on the welfare system contributes to their disempowerment during a Fraser Institute luncheon on Tuesday, September 30.Helin will also discuss his ground-breaking best-seller book, Dances with Dependency: Success through Self-Reliance. In this book, Helin offers hope for a better life to any population trapped in dependency, through a strategic blueprint to greater self-reliance and integrity.

Helin is a member of the Tsimshian Nation from the Northern B.C. community of Lax Kw’alaams (Port Simpson). He is son of hereditary Chief, Smoogyit Nees Nuugan Noos of the Royal House of Gitlan, and Sigyidmhanaa Su Dalx matron of the Royal House of Gitachngeek. Recently, Helin was appointed to the National Council on Welfare (a body that advises the federal Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development). He is the author of several publications relating to law and aboriginal business.
