As the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Sept. 30 approaches, it is time for us to again take stock of how far along the reconciliation process we have come, columnist says
Cornfields were part of the rural landscape of Innisfil as far back as 700 years ago, when the first farmers in the region, the ancestors of the Wendat (Huron) began moving northward from the Toronto area, settling on the sandy loam lowlands near the Minesing swamp and Lake Simcoe.
During the period of migration between 1300 and 1450, Innisfil’s population swelled from 700 people to over 5,000, with villages concentrated in the north half of the township as clearly indicated by the recent sites discovered near the Allandale train station.
