Charter on Federalism: The First Nations Have Concerns

WENDAKE, QC, Aug. 7 – Reacting to statements made by the Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, who is also minister of Native Affairs, Mr. Benoît Pelletier, the Regional Chief of the AFNQL, Ghislain Picard, expressed some concerns. “The place of the First Nations within Canada as a whole must be taken into account in all discussions of constitutional nature. he First Nations will keep a very close watch on this point”, warned the Regional Chief of the AFNQL. On the eve of the Council of the Federation meeting being held this week in Moncton, the Regional Chief of the AFNQL reiterates to the Charest government its offer to have a frank and productive discussion on government to government relations.

The Assembly of First Nations of Quebec and Labrador is the regional organization representing the Chiefs of the First Nations of Quebec and Labrador.
