Welcome to Aanjibimaadisiwin – Indigenous-Specific Responses to Sexual Violence!

Come join us on Thu Feb 27, 2025 at 8:30 AM at the Nipissing University Student Union Building, 221 College Dr, for a day of learning and discussion on Indigenous-specific responses to sexual violence.

This event provides a safe space for Indigenous and allied students, academics and service providers to learn together about how two community-based organizations are addressing the issue of sexual violence through cultural and traditional perspectives.

Morning sessions:

1. Muskoka Parry Sound Community Sexual Assault Service is a field leader in creating Indigenous-specific supports for survivors of sexual violence and has partnered with Drs. Nancy Stevens and Rosemary Nagy to explore how their services are meeting Indigenous needs.

2. Community Living Six Nations, which has partnered with Professor Anna Przednowek and Pam Forest (Nipissing 4th year BSW student), is addressing the needs of Indigenous people with physical and developmental disabilities who have experienced sexual violence.

Afternoon sessions:

1. Dr. Tyson Stewart and his students will share their creative work on Richard Wagamese’s unfinished novel, visually exploring endings produced by the students.

2. Program Pitch! – Participate in a hack-a-thon style team activity to create Indigenous specific programs for survivors of sexual violence, and to pitch them to a panel of adjudicators. Mentors will assist the student teams in creating their ideas. Students will be eligible to apply their participation to their Record of Student Development on their transcript. There will be prizes for the top 3 pitches.

Don’t miss out on this important opportunity to make a difference in our communities. See you there!
