Human emissions of greenhouse gases are the primary driver of climate change. Global greenhouse gas emissions are still rising, despite efforts to shift away from fossil fuels. This puts us on track for a very different future than what we are used to. What will the world of our children and grandchildren be? What do we need to get ready for?
- Climate change will alter aquatic habitats, affecting species such as salmon that depend on cold water. Warmer ocean and river temperatures could reduce salmon populations by up to 50% in some areas by 2050.
- Coastal areas face increased risks of flooding and erosion due to rising sea levels and storm surge. While sea level rise will vary by region, in some coastal communities, sea levels could rise by approximately 0.5 metres by 2050, threatening infrastructure and ecosystems.
- In 2023, over 2.84 million hectares burned across the province of BC, more than double the area affected in any previous year. This surge in wildfire activity is attributed to factors
