Join us for lunch on Wednesday, April 24 and learn about the impact of intellectual property (IP) laws, regulations and norms on Indigenous arts, knowledge and cultural expressions. We’ll talk about the opportunities and challenges of various forms of IP in meeting Indigenous knowledge governance priorities.

Our presenter will share valuable insights, practical tips, and real-life examples to help you make informed decisions.

Kristan Belanger

Kristan Belanger is a proud member of Glooscap First Nation. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, as well as a Juris Doctor from Dalhousie University. Currently pursuing a Masters of Information at Dalhousie, she is dedicated to promoting a holistic understanding of these interwoven fields.

In her role with the Lnuwey Tplutaqan Wikuom (Indigenous Law Lodge), Kristan navigates the intersection of Indigenous knowledge, cultural expressions, and intellectual property, critically examining how Canadian intellectual property law affects Indigenous people today. Her work, framed by both academic and policy perspectives, is committed to fostering understanding and respect for Indigenous legal systems. She advocates for the revitalization of Indigenous legal systems, in part to ensure the proper preservation of Indigenous knowledge and cultural heritage.
