This is a friendly reminder that the opening of Spirit Horse by Drew Hayden Taylor is this Wednesday at Young People’s Theatre. Please see details below.

From its premiere on YPT’s MainStage in 2007 as part of the Luminato Festival, and through its tours across Ontario and the United States, Spirit Horse continues to demonstrate the resilience and unbending spirit of two sisters, Angelina and Jessie, when faced with the threat of marginalization, loss and abandonment.

The theme of YPT’s 2016-17 season is “no one is alone”. In Spirit Horse, Jessie and Angelina are trapped between the urban world they inhabit with their father and the rural life their grandfather and ancestors once possessed. In their struggle to keep their horse Wildwind, Jessie and Angelina experience the support and love of their family, both past and present, while also learning that they have the agency to find the happiness they seek – not just for themselves but for their father as well.

This play continues the necessary conversation around truth and reconciliation with our Indigenous peoples. Facing and overcoming the challenges of both the past and present is daunting. Our young people, however, can bring hope for the future to these discussions. It is there that the potential to build on the promise of reconciliation lives. The hope is that Spirit Horse is one of the many ways in which this conversation can begin – for both young and old.
