POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Manager of Communications, the Communications Officer develops, promotes, and implements communications materials and initiatives for the department or organization, ensuring they reflect the syilx language and culture as well as the priorities and professionalism of the WFN Government. The Communications Officer works to enhance community awareness and engagement in WFN programs, services and initiatives, and enhance communications and relationships with Members, residents, and the community at large. The Officer also develops and implements strategic communication plans, manages WFN digital media platforms and creates engagement.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, English, Marketing, Public Relations, or Journalism required
  • Minimum three (3) years’ experience in public relations, business, marketing or a related field; particularly, coordinating marketing and communicating initiatives or campaigns, and working with a variety of stakeholders
  • Experience with desktop publishing software (Adobe Creative Suite), graphic design, photography, web design, and publication production/printing
  • Experience with social media platforms and content management systems.
  • Experience working in an Indigenous or Local Government is preferred
  • Equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered

REQUIREMENTS

  • Criminal Record Check with results acceptable to WFN
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License and Acceptable Driver’s Abstract
  • Maintains a high level of confidentiality and uses discretion on all matters relating to the affairs of the Westbank First Nation.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILTIES

  • Works collaboratively with the Manager of Communications and staff to develop and implement communications activities that increase Member and public engagement and understanding of government programs or initiatives
  • Researches, writes, and edits a wide variety of communications materials for a range of audiences and mediums, including web content; social media; news releases; newsletters; mail-outs; speeches; presentations; correspondence; factsheets; and brochures.
  • Fosters and enhances communication and relationships with Members, residents, and the community.
  • Ensures relevant and consistent messaging is delivered in a timely manner, and considerable visual attention is given to all public materials or messaging
  • Provides layout and design services, ensuring WFN’s Branding Standards are adhered to, for advertising or marketing collateral, and coordinates ad placement in electronic, print, or social media.
  • Effectively communicates WFN programs, initiatives, and services by managing WFN’s digital platforms, including website, social media content, and WFN’s Member App and online engagement platform.
  • Monitors and reports on communications efforts, participation and engagement metrics.
  • Identifies opportunities to improve and enhance the wfn.ca website and strategic use of digital media
  • Develops and implements strategic social media campaigns that meet WFN’s objectives or goals.
  • Understands and adapts to the evolving nature of online and in-person engagement.
  • Ensures strong interpersonal relationships, courtesy, tact, confidentiality and diplomacy to ensure WFN’s protocols, standards, and procedures are adhered to.
  • Ensures that syilx values and culture permeate key aspects of the WFN Government and its related entities or operations.
  • Attends and takes photos at various events.
  • Availability for occasional evening or weekend work as needed for meetings or events
  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Westbank First Nation policies, standards, and procedures
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as necessary in the performance of the position and as assigned by the Manager of Communications.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Cultural competency, and knowledge of Indigenous practice
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; specific skills in drafting press releases and the ability to concisely express multi-layered ideas and concepts
  • Knowledge of WFN programs and services
  • Proficient in all Adobe Creative Suite programs
  • Knowledge and understanding of website maintenance, HTML and Content Management systems
  • Ability to maintain effective relationships, work in complex and sensitive situations, work independently and within a team environment, and manage competing priorities
  • Task-orientated, strong attention to detail, and high degree of accuracy
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment with multiple priorities
