THE ROLE
As a Cook, you are responsible for the preparation of food for student boarders, catering clients, and visitors. As a member of the Food Services team, you ensure the highest quality standards of food preparation, while adhering to proper cleanliness and sanitation procedures.
HIGHLIGHTED DUTIES OF THE ROLE
- Prepare food according to menu specifications, special dietary or nutritional restrictions, and number of portions to be served.
- Monitor food quality while ensuring strict adherence to food safety regulations.
- Adhere to a first-in first-out food rotation system verifying that all products are properly stored and dated for quality assurance.
- Ensure on-time preparation of food and meals to meet the daily meal schedule.
- General supervision of the dining hall; follow up with students, clear and clean tables, and respond to requests.
- Adhere to proper hygienic storage methods and ensure proper cleanliness and sanitization of workstations.
- Clean and inspect kitchen equipment and work areas to ensure functional operation.
- Track and maintain food waste sheets to ensure optimal food costing.
- Assist with and take weekly inventory of supplies and equipment.
- Assist in the training of new employees as required.
- Receive and store food and supplies.
- Attend and prepare food for scheduled events through the RWB Catering Services.
WORKING CONDITIONS
In this role, you work in a commercial kitchen environment, stand for long periods of time, lift boxes and containers weighing up to 22 KG (50lbs), and work with commercial style equipment. You are required to wear a chef’s jacket, apron, hairnet or suitable head cover, long pants, and closed-toed shoes with stockings. Masks and latex gloves will be provided for food handling.
WHAT YOU BRING
- Post-secondary education in Culinary Arts or Commercial Cooking; an equivalent combination of education and related experience may be considered.
- Manitoba Food Handler Certificate required.
- Knowledgeable in commercial food production techniques, raw materials, production processes, quality controls and costs, and food storage/handling techniques.
- Knowledge of child/athletic nutrition or nutritional analysis desirable.
- First Aid Certification an asset.
- Excellent time management with problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication skills.
- Solid interpersonal skills to work effectively as part of a team.
