It is the mission of Tungasuvvingat Inuit (TI) to provide Inuit-specific programs that contribute to the health and wellbeing of Inuit, and to encourage and support similar programs for Inuit across the country. With over 30 years of highly successful experience in crafting the design, development, and delivery of a wide range of effective, client-centered services, TI continues to deliver quality programs and services that directly benefit our growing urban Inuit population.

The Director, Healing and Wellness is responsible for the effective management of Healing and Wellness-oriented programs within Tungasuvvingat Inuit (TI). Specifically providing oversight for the Day Counselling program, the Social Navigation Support services, the Residential School program, the Regional Cancer program, the Qanuippitaa? (QNIHS) Program, Our Health Counts research, the Manager – Resolution Health Initiatives Position and a variety of strategic initiatives projects. This position collaborates with the directorate/management team and works with all departments within TI and is guided by Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (IQ) and Inuit values, ensuring the integration of traditional knowledge and contemporary practices to foster holistic well-being. Additionally, this position engages with external stakeholders, community partners and Inuit Elders, to ensure effective, culturally responsive and comprehensive client service delivery and represents the organization at the municipal, provincial, and federal level. The position also has financial management accountability/authority over designated Healing and Wellness programs.

Responsibilities:

Operational Planning and Management

  • Oversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of Healing and Wellness programs to ensure they meet the expectations of clients, funders, and TI’s Board of Directors.
  • Plans, implements, and evaluates program services while overseeing and managing programs in accordance with contribution agreements and program mandates.
  • Supports Inuit-led research initiatives that focus on healing and wellness practices, ensuring community ownership and empowerment.
  • Develops program-specific policies and procedures and reviews existing policies on an annual basis and recommends changes to the Executive Director.
  • Ensures an appropriate case management data collection system is established and maintained.

Human Resource Planning and Management

  • Working closely with the Director, Human Resources to ensure the effective recruitment, selection, onboarding, orientation, training, and development of staff.
  • Accountable for ensuring a positive, healthy, and safe work environment in which workplace concerns or staff performance issues are addressed.
  • Mentors and supervises staff within the healing and wellness team, ensuring capacity building for Inuit professionals in the health and wellness sector.

Financial Planning and Management

  • Reviews monthly financial reports and ensures all necessary financial policies, procedures, and systems are followed.
  • Approves and controls expenditures for which it has delegated authority and represents TI in discussions with funding bodies to promote a secure financial partnership between all levels of government to assist in securing adequate funding for the continued operation of the program.
  • Works with the Director, Finance to review potential opportunities for funding and provides relevant information to prepare submissions and proposals.
  • Supports the Director, Finance in preparing the comprehensive budget for programs and submitting accurate quarterly and annual reports to government and other funders.
  • Ensures all necessary financial policies, procedures, and systems are followed.

Corporate Risk Management

  • Oversees the identification and evaluation of the risks to program clients, staff, management, volunteers, property, finances, goodwill, and organizational image for all Healing and Wellness Programs.
  • Ensures the implementation of risk control measures to mitigate identified risks and vulnerabilities
  • Ensures the implementation of safety and security protocols for all Healing and Wellness programs and ensures that client privacy and confidentiality is maintained.
  • Maintains awareness of any changes in program-specific legislation or policy that impacts the organization.

Property and Building Management

  • Working closely with the Director, Operations to monitor, evaluate and communicate property maintenance requirements.
  • Ensure that relevant building concerns such as the general appearance and upkeep of facilities are addressed.

Community Relations

  • Establishes good working relationships and collaborative arrangements with community groups and funders at the municipal, provincial, and federal level as well as with politicians and other organizations to help achieve the goals of TI.
  • Cultivates relationships by keeping stakeholders informed of the work of the organization and the progress of community members served by TI’s Healing and Wellness Programs.
  • Partners with organizations in other sectors to promote linkages, to increase service options for urban Inuit, and to ensure culturally appropriate services.

Qualifications

Knowledge of and appreciation for Inuit culture and values, exemplifying the 8 Guiding Principles of Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit; Knowledge of the unique needs and issues impacting Inuit communities. Familiarity with Inuit history and the impacts of colonization. Understanding of government systems, programs, policies and processes. Knowledge of program and project design, planning, budgeting, management and evaluation experience and Canadian/Ontario mental health act, child act and related legislation.

The ideal candidate should have excellent interpersonal skills along with the ability to work effectively in a cross-cultural environment. Outstanding organizational skills that reflect ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly with excellent attention to detail. Expert level written and verbal communication skills, with a solid grasp of grammar, spelling and punctuation. Demonstrated proactive approaches to problem-solving with strong decision-making capability.

Strong research and analysis skills. Strong project management skills. Adept with Microsoft Office suite, Adobe Acrobat and Human Resource Information System (HRIS). Excellent problem-solving, decision making, team building and time management skills. Excellent attention to detail; meticulous record keeping skills.

Proven ability to handle confidential information with discretion, adaptable to various competing demands.  Demonstrated ability to achieve high performance goals and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Ability to prepare proposals, briefings, notes, proposals, and reports. Ability to function effectively in a cross cultural, high pressure, and high-stress environment.

Completion of undergraduate degree in Business Administration, Health Administration, or a demonstrably related field is required. Master’s degree in Business, public administration, communications, social services, or another relevant field is preferred. Training in First aid and CPR, Non-violent crisis intervention, Project Management is required.

Seven years’ experience is required in working in the mental health field. Five years’ senior-level experience in community-based organization, overseeing groups of over 20 employees, program management experience, management experience dealing with progressively complex environments, experience in budget preparation and oversite is required.  Five years’ previous experience working with Inuit and/or other Indigenous populations is preferred.

Proficient use of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, video-conferencing platforms and electronic records management applications and a clear Vulnerable Sector Check with results acceptable to TI is required. Fluency English and availability to work evening and weekends in required. Ability to speak Inuktitut and valid driver’s license and own reliable vehicle is preferred.
