Health – Special Projects Officer
The Chiefs of Ontario is inviting applications for the position of Special Projects Officer in the Health sector. Under the supervision of the COO Health Director, the Special Projects Officer plays an essential role in designing and coordinating projects that are of strategic value to the Health sector and to the Chiefs of Ontario in general. The Special Projects Officer will be expected to work closely with the Health Director and collaboratively with Health staff, to support the successful development, planning, implementation and evaluation of health-related projects.
For example, the Special Project Officer will be responsible for the coordination and support of large events and gatherings such as the First Nation Community Wellness Conference; A multi-sectoral gathering of First Nations leadership and Technicians, which provides a forum to discuss multi-sectoral issues and priorities under a common lens.
The Special Projects Officer can expect to work with external groups such as Political Territorial Organizations, First Nation Communities, Non-Government Health Organizations, Provincial and Federal Governments, in various capacities. As well, the Special Projects Officer role and responsibilities will vary depending upon the scope of projects and other external factors.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Project management which is inclusive of the development, planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of projects.
- Project proposal development which will be inclusive of writing, researching, and working planning of project proposals.
- Works with the Health Director and Associate Health Director, ensuring projects are within set expectations, timelines and deliverables.
- Works with the Health Director and Associate Health Director, ensuing that projects are aligned and compatible with internal strategic workplans and priorities established by First Nation tables under Health at the Chiefs of Ontario.
- Works with health staff to coordinate and facilitate working groups, task teams etc. to support the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of projects.
- Develop and maintain partnerships with provincial and federal governments, First Nation communities and other relevant organizations.
- Write and develop communications material such as briefing notes, letters, work plans etc. as required.
- Support and undertake other tasks as required.
Candidates must be willing to work flexible hours during peak periods, such as assembly seasons and out-of-town meetings. Travel will also be necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Post-Secondary diploma or degree in Health Science or related degree.
- Two years’ experience in related fields.
- Other combinations of education and experience will be considered.
- Knowledge of First Nation traditions, cultures, and values; understand the history and relationship between First Nations and the Crown.
- Political knowledge for working with First Nation, provincial and federal governments.
- Project management and coordination skills.
- Preference for experience in research and analytical techniques preferably in First Nations settings, community health, or social service settings.
- Advanced written skills for developing communications such as briefing notes, letters, communiques etc. and advance oral communication skills to facilitate and initiate engagement in relevant meetings.
- Computer applications skills (word processing, spreadsheet, project scheduling, and internet) and familiarity with conferencing software such as MS Teams and Zoom.
