Primary Purpose

The Indigenous Recruitment and Outreach Counsellor plays a vital role in supporting University Canada West’s commitment to Indigenous peoples and communities. This position focuses on building and nurturing respectful relationships with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities, as well as Indigenous organizations and schools, to foster pathways to education for Indigenous students. The counsellor also provides comprehensive support to Indigenous students throughout their time at UCW and collaborates on Truth and Reconciliation initiatives, reflecting UCW’s dedication to honouring and celebrating Indigenous cultures, knowledge, and traditions.

The Indigenous Recruitment and Outreach Counsellor is expected to excel in fostering strong, trust-based relationships with Indigenous communities and supporting Indigenous students throughout their educational journey. Success in this role will be measured by:

  • The number of new Indigenous student enrollments and their retention rates.
  • The strength and quality of relationships built with Indigenous communities, Elders, leaders, and organizations.
  • Meaningful contributions to Truth and Reconciliation initiatives, including the impact of cultural events, workshops, and collaborative projects.
  • Regular feedback from Indigenous students and communities, reflecting a positive and respectful engagement experience.

Specific Responsibilities

The Indigenous Recruitment and Outreach Counsellor will, at various times, be responsible for the following as well as other related duties as assigned to support UCW’s business objectives, mission, and purpose:

Outreach and Relationship Building:

  • Build and sustain meaningful and respectful relationships with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities, as well as Indigenous organizations and schools.
  • Represent UCW at Indigenous-led and focused education events, community gatherings, and career fairs to share information about university programs and services.
  • Act as the primary liaison for Indigenous communities, fostering trust, collaboration, and mutual understanding.

Student Recruitment:

  • Deliver in-person and virtual presentations to Indigenous students, families, and communities about UCW’s undergraduate and graduate programs, scholarships, and support services.
  • Guide prospective Indigenous students through the application and admissions process, ensuring awareness of available resources such as financial aid, scholarships, and community support.
  • Actively engage with Indigenous students to inspire confidence in their educational journey and encourage enrollment while respecting their unique circumstances and aspirations.

Student Support and Advocacy:

  • Provide ongoing, personalized support to Indigenous students during their time at UCW, advocating for their academic, cultural, and personal needs.
  • Collaborate across departments to ensure Indigenous students have access to academic, financial, mental health, and wellness support.
  • Serve as a resource and mentor for Indigenous students, offering guidance and connecting them to relevant university and community resources.

Truth and Reconciliation Initiatives:

  • Work in partnership with the Indigenous Action Committee to implement strategies that advance UCW’s commitment to Truth and Reconciliation.
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of university policies, programs, and events to ensure they reflect Indigenous perspectives and cultural protocols.
  • Support the organization of events, workshops, and activities that celebrate Indigenous cultures, languages, and histories while fostering awareness and understanding across the university community.

Collaboration and Support:

  • Collaborate with UCW’s admissions, financial aid, and student support teams to align recruitment strategies and ensure Indigenous students experience a smooth transition into university life.
  • Provide cultural guidance and act as an advisor to UCW faculty and staff, supporting inclusivity and understanding of Indigenous knowledge, histories, and contemporary issues.
  • Contribute to broader recruitment and community engagement initiatives in alignment with UCW’s mission and objectives, ensuring an inclusive approach.

Data Management and Reporting:

  • Document and track outreach efforts, student engagement, and enrollment data, providing detailed reports to university leadership to inform strategic decision-making.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of interactions with Indigenous communities, students, and organizations, respecting cultural and privacy considerations.

Professional Development and Community Engagement:

  • Stay informed about trends, practices, and policies related to Indigenous education, recruitment, and student support.
  • Participate in conferences, workshops, and community events to build professional networks and strengthen relationships with Indigenous leaders, Elders, and organizations.

Position Requirements

Competencies:

  • In-depth knowledge of the diverse cultures, traditions, languages, and histories of Indigenous peoples, including First Nations, Métis, and Inuit.
  • Familiarity with reconciliation efforts and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action as they relate to education.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust and cultivate meaningful, respectful relationships.
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines effectively.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and experience with CRM or student management systems is an asset.
  • Willingness and ability to travel regularly to Indigenous communities and attend events across British Columbia, with occasional travel beyond the province.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation.
  • A demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and engagement with Indigenous communities and cultures.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Indigenous Studies, Education, Counseling, Social Work, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of demonstrated experience working with Indigenous communities in roles such as outreach, student support, cultural advocacy, or education.
  • Experience in counselling, recruitment, community development, or a similar field is highly valued.
