Indigenous Supported Child Development Consultant
POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting directly to the Indigenous Infant and Child Development Coordinator, the Indigenous Supported Child Development (ISCD) Consultant provides family-centered service, early intervention, child development support, family support, and individual planning for children 3-12 with developmental disabilities or delays. This position works collaboratively with community child care programs and other child development and early years professionals. The ISCD Consultant is part of the Community Services team, specifically working in the Early Years department.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- BA in Early Childhood Development or a related field (such as child and youth care, psychology, social work, education, etc.)
- Early Childhood Education with a Special Needs Designation
- Minimum of three (3) years of related work experience, including working with children with additional support needs
- Experience working with indigenous communities/children considered an asset
- Equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered
REQUIREMENTS
- Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search, results acceptable to WFN
- Valid driver’s license and acceptable driver’s abstract with access to a reliable vehicle required.
- Valid First Aid with CPR Level B
- Compliance with the BC Provincial TB and Vaccine Program
- Maintains a high level of confidentiality and uses discretion on all matters relating to the affairs of the Westbank First Nation and clients.
JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILTIES
- Works collaboratively with the Westbank First Nation {WFN) community, including the After School Program (ASP), Westbank Child Development Centre (WCDC), Sensisyusten, the WFN Family Program, and the WFN Wellness Team, to support children that require additional assistance to fully participate in activities.
- Provides support, consultation, and training for parents/caregivers and child care providers.
- Provides ”…services that strengthen the child’s ”Circle of Support” within the context of their family and their community”.
- Determines eligibility and levels of support that can be provided.
- Conducts developmental screenings and assessments when needed.
- Creates an Individual Service Plan (ISP) for each child. These include strategies and activities for inclusion, as well as daily activities and experiences to meet developmental goals and objectives.
- Coordinates services to ensure the best supports are being provided to the child and their family.
- Determines and monitors extra staffing support needs.
- Informs families of available resources and supports, and makes referrals to relevant services as needed.
- Maintains comprehensive, up-to-date files for each child, ensuring necessary forms and consents are complete. Prepares and completes reports as required.
- Ensures timely and accurate reporting as required by the province.
- Assists in transitions to Kindergarten, middle school, or other transitions that may impact the child.
- Works within a flexible schedule and performs other duties as necessary in the performance of the position and as directed.
- Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with WFN policies, standards, and procedures, and as directed by the Indigenous Infant and Child Development Coordinator.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Previous experience working with Indigenous children and their families
- Ability to develop and maintain a warm, caring, responsive relationship with children and families
- Ability to establish and maintain supportive, collaborative relationships with families, child care setting staff, child development professionals, and colleagues
- Knowledge of Westbank First Nation and of the support services offered within the community
- Working knowledge of trauma-informed, family-centered, and inclusive practice
- Intermediate level of proficiency with Microsoft Office
- Ability to work individually and as part of a team with minimal supervision
- Ability to use a cultural safety framework when working with Indigenous children, families, and communities
