Reporting to the Dean, Faculty of Computer Science and Technology (FCST), the IT Technician is responsible for providing technical support, maintenance, and assistance to faculty, staff, and students within the FCST. Under the general supervision of the Dean, the IT Technician will install, maintain, oversee, and supervise equipment and software in the FCST labs used for computing research, development, teaching, and training facilities for students, faculty, and staff.

The incumbent’s duties include ensuring the smooth operation of FCST hardware and software, assisting with budget management and equipment needs, conducting inventory checks, providing support to FCST staff as necessary, instructing students and staff on the use of computer technology and software applications, and monitoring students’ activities with this technology

RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical Support and Maintenance (60%)

  • Provide excellent customer service and technical support to Faculty, Staff, Students and others within the Faculty of Computer Science and Technology.
  • Assist faculty, staff, and students with the installation and maintenance of required hardware and software.
  • Manage the computer servers for any relevant teaching and research programs.
  • Oversee the FCST databases and create virtual environments for courses.
  • Act as the onsite Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Faculty of Computer Science & Technology technical support.
  • Support the scheduling and coordination of lab sessions
  • Oversee and manage the day to day computer operations needs.
  • Provide training and instruction for users in the relevant computing technology and software applications.
  • Oversee and monitor student activities in computer labs and classrooms for the Faculty of Computer Science and Technology.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to meet technical needs.
  • Participate in ongoing training, development and compliance regulation with the broader IT department at Algoma University
  • Participate in a broader technical community of practice to foster strong collaborative relationships with other cross functional departments.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development to stay up to date with changes and updates to technologies.

Equipment and Software Management (30%)

  • Regularly track and document all hardware and software to ensure accurate inventory.
  • Ensure safe storage and placement of equipment by implementing secure storage practices and organizing the lab space for accessibility and safety.
  • Support the development of policies and procedures for borrowing equipment while also monitoring usage to prevent damage or misuse.
  • Work with vendors and establish strong relationships to ensure prompt procurement and delivery of necessary resources.
  • Prepare and submit purchase orders for the Faculty for Computer Science & Technology.
  • Review and maintain the purchase records for the department.
  • Support the ongoing tracking of budget and equipment.
  • Set up and configure new equipment and regularly update software to maintain peak performance.
  • Perform routine maintenance and troubleshoot issues by conducting maintenance checks and quickly resolving any hardware or software problems within set Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
  • Support the configuration of network hardware and troubleshoot connectivity issues.
  • Offer assistance to students and staff on using lab equipment and conduct ongoing and regular training sessions.
  • Ensure the lab continues to meet all required safety standards and is accessible to all students and staff when required.
  • Keep informed about new technologies and recommend improvements as needed.

Moderate: Standard office work with some lifting/physical effort required for transportation of materials and equipment as required

Minimal: Minimal exposure to unpleasant/disagreeable conditions.

Considerable: Moderate need for detailed/precise work to be completed while accommodating regular interruptions

Mental Stress

Considerable: Work activities are performed with occasional exposure to one or more mental pressures but the stress would not be noticeably disruptive to the work nor result in unpleasant reactions (i.e normal deadlines, client interactions, repetitive work etc).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Undergraduate degree in Information Technology or Computer Science with a minimum of two (2) years of experience with technical support in a lab environment or educational institution, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Level II Hardware/Software Certification (eg. CompTIA Network+ or Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)) is required.
  • Strong knowledge of Computer Hardware configuration required
  • In-depth knowledge of a broad range of information technologies including, but not limited to, software applications, computer networks, operating systems (macOS, Linux, Windows), and the installation, configuration, and maintenance of computer systems is required.
  • Excellent planning, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with network and systems administration.
  • Excellent administrative and organizational skills, with the ability to take initiative and prioritize work in a high-volume environment.
  • Strong technology skills for collaboration; proficiency with Microsoft and Google applications; Google Workspace preferred
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with a proven ability to build and maintain positive relationships.
  • Excellent communication skills, particularly the ability to make formal presentations, and read, interpret, and explain specialized technical documentation.
  • Understanding of, and ability to uphold, strict confidentiality.
  • Ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds, styles, and abilities.
  • Innovative problem-solver.

Salary Scale: $60,471 to $75,589 annually.
