It is the mission of Tungasuvvingat Inuit (TI) to broadly provide Inuit-specific programs that contribute to the health and wellbeing of Inuit and to encourage and support similar programs for Inuit across the country. With over 30 years of highly successful experience in crafting the design, development, and delivery of a wide range of effective, client-centered services, TI continues to deliver quality programs and services that directly benefit our growing urban Inuit population.

Reporting to the Manager, Alluriarniq Program, the Outreach Worker is responsible for utilizing Inuit societal values, harm-reduction, trauma informed and decolonizing frameworks to assist Inuit youth and adults aged 13 years and older who are involved in sex-work, as well as individuals who are /survivors of sexually exploited to safely access harm reduction resources and information. The position will engage in content co-creation for mobile, net, and partnership outreach, provide preventative presentations and resources to Inuit and community partners, as well as be an in-community presence and support the intake process of individuals to the Alluriarniq program.

Key responsibilities of the position include:

  • Liaise with community members to educate members on the outreach services available.
  • Educate internal and external partners on the outreach services that TI can provide to clients and the community.
  • Actively participate in knowledge-sharing opportunities.
  • Accountable for keeping abreast with the partnership roster, becoming familiar with external services, and understanding the services available to assess the appropriate and best-matched referral path for the client’s potential success.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to identify potential clients.
  • Establish relationships with partners to refer clients successfully.
  • Mobile Outreach – actively make themselves visible, educate potential clients on services available and distribute materials.
  • Complete initial intakes of potential clients – soft referrals within the organization.
  • Referrals to relevant external agencies/service providers.
  • Actively participating in the development of the Outreach plan.
  • Coordinate the drop-in laundry and shower services and implement safety regulations.
  • Providing presentations as assigned.
  • Supporting the administrative requirements for outreach.
  • Prepare resources, country food and meals for outreach as needed.
  • Support in the procurement of outreach resources as directed by supervisor.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a thorough understanding of Inuit culture, values, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit and traditional practices. Will have strong knowledge of privacy and confidentiality requirements pertaining to children, youth and families involved with children’s aid societies in Ontario. Specialized knowledge in systems navigation and training in trauma care, mental health and wellness, violence against women, child welfare, justice services, addiction, and traditional healing practices is required.

Excellent interpersonal skills, case and file management skills, organizational and time management skills, communication and group facilitation skills, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, decision-making skills are necessary.

The ability to develop and deliver programming, to maintain accurate client records and case notes using case management software, employ effective crisis intervention and conflict resolution approaches and techniques, to build and deliver engaging presentations, to develop rapport trust and ethical relationships with clients, to work from a strength-based, trauma-informed, and community member centered approach is essential.  Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends, to travel outside of Ottawa to provide program oversight and attend meetings as required, and to work off-site at community events is required.

A post-secondary degree or diploma in social services or directly related education and two years of experience working in outreach, community engagement and/or client service is required. Proficient use of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, video-conferencing platforms and electronic records management applications is required. A valid driver’s license and a driver’s abstract acceptable to TI, and Clear Vulnerable Sector Check with results acceptable to TI is required. Fluency in English is required and the ability to communicate in Inuktitut is a significant asset.

An acceptable combination of related education and work experience may be considered.

Salary and Benefits

  • Annual Salary $53,000
