POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting directly to the Utilities Working Foreperson, the Utilities Co-op Student II will be exposed to a variety of situations, methods, and learning outcomes relevant to industry standards as a Water Distribution Operator. This position will primarily involve a variety of tasks in water distribution operations and maintenance.
This position is a learning and support role, that assists with the operation, maintenance, repair and upkeep of the water supply systems, equipment, and related facilities of the Westbank First Nation (WFN). This is a 4-month term.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Students must be enrolled in a full-time educational program at a recognized post-secondary institution, with a minimum of second year course work complete
  • Preference will be given to a Water Engineering Technology program student (or equivalent)
  • Students must return to program studies upon completion of co-op employment
  • Chlorination Safe Operations and Handling Course (current)
  • First Aid Level 1 – preferred but not essential

REQUIREMENTS

  • Verification of acceptance into a Co-operative Education Program
  • Physically fit, able to lift 25 kgs, walk, bend and operate light equipment
  • Criminal Record Check with results acceptable to WFN
  • Valid Class 5 or 7N Driver’s License and Acceptable Driver’s Abstract
  • Maintains a high level of confidentiality and uses discretion on all matters relating to the affairs of the Westbank First Nation

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILTIES

  • Follows an assigned schedule and works with staff in the various areas of the Utilities & Public Works Department
  • Assists staff with a variety of assigned duties including administrative type tasks and some outside field tasks i.e. site inspection(s)
  • Attends a variety of meetings with staff in order to gain a better understanding of the sub-departments within Property Management, Infrastructure and Engineering
  • Assists with any projects that arise in order to gain further knowledge of how a local government operates
  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Westbank First Nation policies, standards, and procedures

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • General labouring and experience with common hand and power tools
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to take instruction and receive feedback
  • Ability to operate in an outdoor environment
  • Knowledge of essential computer programs such as Outlook, Word and Excel
  • Collaboration skills and growth mindset
  • Interpersonal and intercultural awareness and conduct when working with the community and public facing
  • Knowledge of WFN Community Services programs, services and issues
