2012 National Scholarship Announcement 

The First Nations Information Governance Centre (FNIGC) Board of Directors is pleased to announce a Scholarship opportunity for First Nation students who are pursuing a degree in the field of Epidemiology, Population Health, Statistics or Information Management Technology. Based upon available funding, the FNIGC will grant two (2) $1,000.00 Scholarships annually to aid students in their education endeavours in these specialized fields. 

The FNIGC is a First Nations organization mandated to serve the information, research and training needs of First Nations. First Nations now have a dedicated Centre that will serve as the permanent home of the First Nations Regional Health Survey (RHS) and will soon be conducting another national survey process called the “First Nations Regional Early Childhood, Education and Employment Survey (FNREEES) . These surveys will continue to build upon the success of the RHS process and will provide an abundance of information, research, training, data collection, analysis and dissemination services to First Nations at the community, regional and national levels.

Scholarship Rules: 
• Interested and eligible students are to complete an application and submit two (2) 500 word essays as selected from the list of essays topics below:

1. Please describe how credible data can be beneficial to a First Nations community for service delivery planning and evaluation. Use specific examples.
2. Please discuss why you would be a good candidate to receive the FNIGC Scholarship.
3. The First Nations Principles of Ownership, Control, Access and Possession™ are fundamental foundations for the work undertaken at the FNIGC. Please discuss how OCAP will apply to the work that you will pursue in your planned professional career.
4. What are the important health-related issues for First Nations, and why? Please specify the policy implications for the issues.
5. What are the social well-being issues for First Nations, and why? Please specify the policy implications for the issues.
6. Please discuss why cultural connectedness is so important for First Nations health and well-being? 

• The essays and application form can be submitted electronically via email. Essay must be in a format compatible with Microsoft Word, double spaced and on 8 ½” by 11” format. 

• All applications must be submitted and be received by 4:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, September 17, 2012. 
• All fields on the application form must be completed in order for applications to be accepted. 
• Scholarship winners will be announced by October 5, 2012 and posted on the FNIGC website: www.fnigc.ca
• Two Scholarship Recipients will receive $1,000.00 each. 
• Applications are subject to verification for eligibility.
• By submitting an application, the winner consents to the use of his/her name and address (City/First Nation only) in any related FNIGC publicity.

Who can apply for the Scholarship? 
Any First Nations citizen / member, who is pursuing a degree in the field of Epidemiology, Population Health, Statistics or Information Management Technology. 

What is the award? 
Two (2) Recipients will receive a monetary cash award of $1,000.00 (One Thousand Dollars).

What is the deadline for submitting an application? 
The deadline is 4:00 p.m. EST, September 17, 2012. Applications can be made via mail, fax, courier delivery or received electronically. Void where Prohibited.
