Raising the Roof Canada’s Reside Winnipeg project provides around-the-clock support for vulnerable Indigenous youth and their families

In a neighbourhood as old and economically diverse as the North End, it isn’t surprising to learn that many of the buildings take on different lives. The 110-year-old structure at 573 Mountain Ave. is no exception, and it is also proof that old buildings can still yield fresh, new opportunities.

Last month, Raising the Roof Canada completed its first project outside Toronto – Reside Winnipeg, a three-unit housing property for families and youth unable to otherwise afford a home.

Built by Purpose Construction – a Winnipeg social enterprise, which trains its staff in construction skills – the project contains two larger units on the main and upper floors which will “be made available to Indigenous families that are currently experiencing homelessness or are at risk of homelessness,” according to the RTR website. The bedroom on the lower level willserve as a transitional housing space for youth aging out of care.
