The second-longest-running annual pow wow in Ontario made it 58 years this weekend.
Aamjiwnaang First Nation welcomed 251 dancers from various communities across North America to its pow wow grounds at Bear Park Saturday and Sunday.
That’s up from about 230 last year, and more than 10 times that many spectators were hoped for over the course of the weekend at the gathering featuring dancing, drumming, food and community, said Aamjiwnaang Chief Chris Plain.
For the maybe two-thirds of Aamjiwnaang band members who don’t reside normally within the First Nation territory, the pow wow that trails only Wiikwemkoong on Manitoulin Island in its longevity is a homecoming opportunity, Plain said.
