(July 16, 2024 – Unceded Algonquin Territory, Ottawa, Ontario) – The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak welcomed the historic apology issued by the Government of Canada to the Dakota and Lakota Nations for longstanding injustices, including the wrongful designation of these Nations as “refugees.”

“Canada’s apology is a critical step forward. It sets the foundation for a renewed nation-to-nation relationship,” said AFN National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak. “However, this apology must lead to meaningful changes that ensure fair treatment and opportunities for the Dakota and Lakota. We must move beyond acknowledgment to concrete actions that address the harms done and affirm the sovereignty and rights of the Dakota and Lakota Nations. We expect the federal government to fulfill its commitments and work closely with these Nations to ensure their rights are respected and upheld.”

“I lift up the leaders of the Dakota and Lakota Nations for their determination in securing this historic apology. I also acknowledge and honour the leaders and citizens of Birdtail Sioux Dakota, Canupawakpa Dakota, Dakota Plains Wahpeton, Dakota Tipi, Sioux Valley Dakota, Standing Buffalo Dakota, Wahpeton Dakota, Whitecap Dakota, and Wood Mountain Lakota First Nations for their strength and dedication,” concluded AFN National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak.

The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) is a national advocacy organization that works to advance the collective aspirations of First Nations individuals and communities across Canada on matters of national or international nature and concern.
