Treaty One Territory, Winnipeg, MB – The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) congratulates Prime Minister Mark Carney on the appointment of his new Cabinet and extends congratulations to all new and returning Ministers.

This Cabinet marks a historic moment for First Nations in Canada. For the first time, a First Nations woman has been appointed Minister of Indigenous Services: Mandy Gull-Masty, former Grand Chief of the Cree Nation Government of Eeyou Istchee. AMC also celebrates the appointment of Anishinaabe leader from Manitoba, Rebecca Chartrand, as Minister of Northern Development. These appointments reflect the growing presence and leadership of First Nations women in federal decision-making.

AMC would also like to congratulate the appointment of Rebecca Alty as Minister of Crown–Indigenous Relations. We look forward to our future discussions and working together.

“The swearing-in of Prime Minister Carney’s Cabinet is a significant moment for the country, and especially for First Nations,” said Grand Chief Kyra Wilson. “We look forward to building respectful, Nation-to-Nation relationships with this new team and ensuring that the commitments made to First Nations in the Liberal Party platform are fully implemented with clear identified timelines and deliverables. Treaty implementation will continue to be a priority for our Nations as we move ahead.

The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs recognizes this moment as a step forward in the presence of First Nations leadership at the federal level, and we look forward to working together.
